THE FLYING DRAGON

Key attitude: “Go with the flow.” It is said that by riding the wind, the dragon reaps the whirlwind. This means that instead of foolishly and fruitlessly resisting the wind, the wise dragon (as well as anyone with a modicum of common sense!) first correctly discerns the way the wind is moving and then “goes with the flow,” using the wind to his advantage.

On the battlefield, a general must always be alert for what’s called “the ebb and flow” of battle, when the “winds of battle” shift in your favor, or against you, the same way a sailor stays ever alert for shifting winds lest he find himself suddenly crashing upon the rocks.

In one-on-one combat, this reminds us of the Judo Principle: our opponent tries to push us and, rather than resisting him, we pull him. Conversely, he tries to pull us and, instead of resisting his strength, we unexpectedly “go with the flow,” thereby doubling the strength of our countertechnique throw or takedown.

This attitude and tactic harkens back to not challenging the Will of Heaven. Or, if you prefer a more Western adage, Jesus’ “Resist not evil ... if a man forces you to go one mile with him, go with him two instead.”204

A secondary catchphrase sometimes assigned to this tactic is “occupy the mind,” entreating us to occupy both our own mind (with timely and true intelligence) while dazzling our enemy’s mind by feeding him doubt and disinformation.
